She says …
You know those moments when you “stumble” upon the exact thing you needed, but didn’t know you did.
That was the moment I found out that LeAnn Rimes had a podcast.
Yup, that LeAnn Rimes – “Blue,” “Can’t Fight the Moonlight”, too many hits to name. And her pod is absolute brilliance!
There are a lot of ah-has for me in her show. But one in particular comes to mind to share here. It’s the episode with mindset coach and author Martha Beck (perhaps most known for her work with Oprah).
Here’s why this episode changed my life:
As artists, we can have a complicated relationship with our artistic selves. I’m no exception. My desire to sing has been an on-again-off-again, Ross and Rachel type thing. And this podcast episode (finally) explained why.
I won’t give it all away – it’s totally better if you listen in – but the premise is this:
My rocky relationship with my voice can be boiled down to an integrity problem. That’s a fancy way to say that there was a part of me that was not fully “on board” with my desire to sing. Turns out, I was conflicted by what my culture taught me about it — that it was “wrong” somehow to want to pursue music past childhood, + the whole “broke musician” thing — and what my heart wanted. (Can you relate?)
Of course I read Beck’s book at the earliest chance I got. And I read the entire thing in a few days. Perhaps that was information overload, but it was the information about integrity that was so compelling.
Beck’s book: The Way of Integrity.
Highly recommended read.
And yeah, LeAnn, well, she’s just magic. Every episode is better than the last. Her podcast is called “Wholly Human” – which makes me love her even more.
“Peace is your home, integrity is the way to it, and everything you long for will meet you there.”
